#1 is a straightaway hole bunkered left and right, but easily carried by the long hitters. It is out of bounds on the left side of the fairway. A well-placed tee shot down the middle sets up a 200-yard approach to the medium sized green. Par is a good score on this opening hole.

The second hole is a 417-yard par four with out-of-bounds all the way down the left side. A creek runs across the fairway some 310 yards from the tee. The prudent golfer will want to place his tee shot to the left centre of the fairway to avoid the four-inch rough and set up a middle-iron approach to an elevated two-tiered green. This devilish hole will yield very few birdies. Take your par and get onto the next hole.

Awaiting the golfer on the third tee is a 414-yard par 4 straightaway hole. It’s up hill for the first 150 yards, allowing the golfer only a top view of the flagstick and the pin location. Avoid the pond on the right with a middle left tee shot. Hint: Add one more number in selecting your club for your approach shot to a green that is bunked on both sides. Par is a good score here.

The fourth hole, a 150-yard par three guarded by a pond on the right will yield its share of birdies. If you miss the green, be short and left. Back long will put the golfer in treacherous three put territory.

The decision on how to play the short 475-yard, par 5 fifth hole will be made on the tee. The driver brings thick woods on both sides of the fairway into play. However, a draw down the right side will set the golfer up for a long-iron approach to an elevated green. A lay-up off the tee with a five iron will leave the golfer with a choice of clubs depending on how close to or how far from the brook he prefers to make his approach shot to the green. Either way, don’t be long, as the resulting precarious chip may run off the green. Avoiding trouble off the tee will set up birdie and eagle opportunities.

From the championship tee number seven is a straightaway 402-yard par four, guarded left and right by traps. The ideal tee shot is left centre avoiding the lengthened rough and out-of-bounds up the entire left side. If you don’t get birdie you may feel that you have lost a shot to the field.

Like the mercury in a thermometer, the eighth hole will see scores rise and fall dramatically. This hole will yield birdies and double bogies depending on the tee shot. The hole is short, at 348 yards, but the lake in front of the green will beckon the golfer to a possible watery grave if he attempts to cut the corner and shorten the distance. With driver in hand, a draw down the right side will take the lake out of play leaving a pitching wedge to the green. Missing the green long-right makes a score other than par a definite possibility. Weigh your options on the tee.

The ninth hole measures 365 yards up hill to an elongated green. The ideal tee shot is middle left taking the fairway trap out of play and avoiding the rough. Add one more club to the approach, and avoid the pot bunker guarding the right side of the green. Missing long brings bogey into the equation.

From the elevated tee, the par 5, 507-yard tenth hole is a slight dog length left to a treacherous green guarded on both sides by bunkers. The range is out-of-bounds to the left and fairway traps guard both sides of a generous fairway. The ideal tee shot is a draw down the right side with a metal wood thus avoiding running out of fairway and finding the grove of pine trees. Missing short right on the approach will leave the golfer with a makeable eagle chip or a tap-in birdie putt. Long on either side leaves a difficult up and down.

A brook crosses the 11th fairway about 230 yards from the tee. Carrying the water hazard sets up a lofted shot (recommended) to this difficult green. For the less daring, an iron off the tee leaves the golfer 140 yards from the target. Par is a good score on this 371-yard par four.

Woods line both sides of the 12th fairway. Driver off the tee is recommended for this generous fairway. Taking one more club for the approach is advisable, as the hole plays longer than the 397 yards indicated on the card. Stick it close and get your birdie.

Trouble lurks on both sides of this pie shaped narrow green. Every good par three has a bail out area and this one is no exception. Short front will leave a relatively easy chip. Don’t be long especially when the pin is located on the front of the green.

The signpost of the sixteenth hole, a short 280-yard par four says, take straight aim. What the sign sponsors had in mind was a tee shot straight down the middle, avoiding the woods on the left and the meteor like crevice on the right. This will leave a chip from just right of the green. Easy birdie, or perhaps a different species of a feathered vertebrate is in the equation.

The final two finishing holes have often been described as the most difficult finishing holes in the province. A brook runs through the 429-yard, par 4 seventeenth fairway leaving the golfer with a choice of sides. Most will prefer the slightly longer but wider right side. Down the right side, some 275 yards from the tee will set a 150-yard shot to an elevated, bunkerless green. Par is good score here.
